Adult learning

Learning has no age limit. Since 2023, we have been creating adult learning opportunities in the rural communities of Alto Belice Corleonese.

What it is

Adult education has been part of Naqah's work since we were founded in 2023. In Marineo and across Alto Belice Corleonese, we regularly organise non-formal learning workshops, meetings and activities for adults. This work did not begin with our first Erasmus+ adult education grant: the project builds on experience already gained.

Our adult learners take part in activities on environmental sustainability, reuse, culture and creativity, wellbeing, citizenship and digital skills. Learning happens through practical experience, discussion and exchanging knowledge; it does not always require classrooms or formal lessons. Some activities are organised independently, while others are part of initiatives such as VerdeVisivo, Questo Corpo and Comunità Sostenibili, which also engage adults and local communities.

We want to make this work increasingly consistent, structured, accessible and well documented. Lifelong learning can also help rural communities thrive, strengthen connections between generations and open up new ways to participate.

Who it's for

Our activities are for adults aged 18 and over, with no upper age limit: young adults, people in work or looking for new opportunities, volunteers, educators, cultural workers and anyone wishing to gain skills or take a more active role in their community.

We mainly work with people from Marineo and other towns in Alto Belice Corleonese, paying attention to those who face financial, geographical, social or digital barriers to learning. We also welcome people who wish to share what they know. Each activity specifies who can join and any requirements; you do not need to be a Naqah member to express interest.

Goals and how we reach them

Learning is not just about gathering information: it is about putting it into practice, gaining independence and building connections. Our activities value people's existing skills and experience, including through exchange between generations.

Learning by doing

Workshops, experimentation and peer learning: we build on each person's experience and what they bring to the group.

Building confidence

Learning that considers different needs and paces, building confidence, independence and opportunities for community participation.

Opening up to Europe

European exchanges, mobility and training help us improve existing programmes and create further learning opportunities.

What we have done so far

Our adult learning experience is built on real activities delivered over time. Some are open to the wider community; others have taken place through Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps projects. This timeline highlights a selection of activities rather than a complete catalogue.

  1. Since 2023

Since Naqah was founded, we have regularly organised educational activities involving adults: cultural meetings, creative workshops, environmental education and opportunities to learn together across Alto Belice Corleonese.

  2. 2025

Our programme grows through calligraphy using sustainable materials, Fast Fashion Rehab, screen printing, a Permaculture Picnic in Godrano, microgreens workshops and Parliamone, an open discussion on body image, food and social media. Activities linked to VerdeVisivo and Questo Corpo also bring learning opportunities to the wider adult community.

  3. 2026

Learning continues with workshops on medicinal herbs and making everyday products, turning T-shirts into reusable bags, and Caviardage, a form of creative reading and writing. These activities sit alongside our work on community participation, sustainability and wellbeing.

  4. August 2026

Naqah takes part as an informal partner in an adult learning mobility experience in Greece, between Athens and Argos, involving a group of 19 people. The focus is on green skills, outdoor learning and educational approaches to share back home.

  5. September 2026

With the approval of Radici Digitali, an Erasmus+ KA122-ADU project, we begin strengthening adult learning activities that already exist, focusing on staff development, digital storytelling, media literacy and better ways to design and evaluate learning.

In numbers

We have been delivering adult learning activities since 2023. In 2026, we have 20 adult learners. We are continuing to organise our activity and attendance records so we can also document the workshops delivered accurately.

Where we are now

We are not starting from scratch: Naqah already runs recurring activities, works with adult learners and has experience in non-formal education. Through Radici Digitali, we are investing in the quality of this work, strengthening staff skills, learning-outcome-based course design, digital storytelling, media literacy and evaluation.

We aim to organise existing experiences into recognisable, repeatable learning pathways on sustainability and caring for the local area, creativity and communication, citizenship and wellbeing. These are development plans, not a list of new courses already running: topics, dates and practical arrangements will be shared once confirmed. Our goal is to keep providing learning opportunities in rural communities, with more continuity and stronger methods.
